- Explaining Siemens Gigaset 3: VoIP

Picture: Latest VoIP phone by Gigaset: S685 IPInternet telephony so-called Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) has to be be distinguished from old-fashioned fixed line telephony. It is a general term for a family of transmission technologies for delivery of voice communications over the Internet or other packet-switched networks. Other terms frequently encountered and synonymous with VoIP are IP telephony, as well as voice over broadband, broadband telephony, and broadband phone, when the network connectivity is available over broadband Internet access.
VoIP systems usually interface with the traditional public switched telephone network (PSTN) to allow for transparent phone communications worldwide. VoIP can be a benefit for reducing communication and infrastructure costs by routing phone calls over existing data networks and avoiding duplicate network systems. Skype and Vonage are notable service provider examples that have achieved widespread user and customer acceptance and market penetration. Voice-over-IP systems carry telephony speech as digital audio, typically reduced in data rate using speech data compression techniques, packetized in small units of typically tens of milliseconds of speech, and encapsulated in a packet stream over IP.

Bugs and improvement proposals
Please find below a nice field report about switching between fixed line and VoIP calls with a Siemens Gigaset telephone. Chris describes in a nice way first his problems and then asks for improvement:
Dear Moritz,I have a house in rural France. The services (water, electricity, telephone, and ADSL/broadband) are not 100% reliable, they often go off for no reason and then re-appear some time later. On Monday last week my broadband stopped working. I tried my utmost to encourage a fast repair, but I failed. So now when I pick up the phone it says 'Provider Registration failed'. If I want to make a call I have to press the top right-hand button which I have programmed to make a 'Fixed Line Call'.
Then I can get the number from the directory and make the call using the fixed line. I am sure that you have many thousands of customers in all over Europe who like me, have their broadband and perhaps land line service temporally interrupted and need an automatic solution.- Explaining Siemens Gigaset 1: High Definition Sound Performance (HDSP)
What's HDSP?
HDSP stands for High Definition Sound Performance. It's a new Siemens Gigaset innovation that lets you phone over the internet in wideband audio quality ? and enjoy conversations in twice the sound quality of a normal phone call. What are the benefits of HDSP?
Thanks to a frequency band twice that of standard phones, Siemens Gigaset's High Definition Sound Performance phones let you experience internet (VoIP) conversations in unparalleled sound quality. This extended frequency range means HDSP calls can transmit more audio details than ever before, eliminating much of the static and interference common to normal phone calls. As a result, you can hear every inflection in the voice of the person you're talking to ? and experience calls that sound more like face-to-face conversations.- Siemens Gigaset 685 IP Software Bugs

Hey Everyone,Chris discovered 2 bugs of the new software of the Siemens Gigaset S685 IP. Please share with us if you have the same problems or even better: Share with us if you found a solution to fix the problems. Here are the problems with the new software put forward by Chris:
A few days ago I downloaded the new firmware (version 021390000000 / 043.00) as I expect thousands of others have done. I believe the new firmware has introduced two defects. There may be more but I have not found them yet.
1. Prior to the update I had my own answering machine message recorded. When the new version was installed, mine was deleted and the default Siemens version appeared. I am 99% sure that this problem was caused by the new firmware.
2. Prior to the update, the phone checked for emails every 15 minutes. The service has now stopped. I have reloaded the details and tested the phone. I can not make it work. I am 95% sure this fault was caused by the new firmware.
Thanks Chris for your input!

1996 saw the launch of what was the largest Gigaset series to date: the 1000 models. The portfolio ranged from a cordless DECT phone to a corded desktop phone and an ISDN system. In that year, the Siemens Gigaset 1010 ? the successor to the Siemens Gigaset 910 ? was the best-selling phone in Germany . Further developments in corded desktop phones were handsfree speaking (the Siemens Gigaset 1020) and, for the first time, an integrated answering machine (the Gigaset 1030).A cordless ISDN device was also offered: the Siemens Gigaset 1054 isdn. For the first time, additional handsets could be connected to the corded base station. At the same time, the convenience of the Siemens Gigaset handsets increased: The Siemens Gigaset 1000 C now offered an illuminated display, intuitive menu guidance and a phonebook with space for up to 100 entries. Of particular interest was the Siemens Gigaset 1015, the first compact cordless phone with an integrated digital answering machine.
So is is there anybody out there how did not have one of this Gigaset 1000 models phones? I don't think so.

- What is Triple Play?
OK. How many of you have triple play? Not you? Actually, you should all be raising your hands. You all have a telephone. You all have a TV. Most of you have broadband internet access. So you have the voice/video/data triple play, right? Well, in the conventional sense, yes, you do. But real IP triple play is about more than a combination of services. Even if these services are bundled under one bill from one provider. A true IP triple play bundle is about integration. Integration for both the service provider and the consumer. For the service provider, integration means a common provisioning, billing, and management interface across all services. This means you should be able to define virtually any combination of different IP services (not just voice, video, and data either- how about security monitoring, gaming, dating, etc.), launch them, and manage them with the same back-end system. This is the true benefit of IP services--- a common platform to create and manage the services. Huge cost savings in provisioning and management. Improved customer care. And a whole lot less headaches. For the customer, triple play integration means a common look and feel across a variety of interfaces-- phone, PC, cell phone, TV, PDA, etc. It also means these different types of services are aware of each other and even imbedded in the others. Take for example "Telco TV" interfaces, where you can make calls from your remote control, see caller ID on your TV screen (and then decide to answer or forward directly to voice-mail without getting off the couch), download movies, and view your service history, billing, recent calls made, etc. This is a great example because it takes the best of the digital TV menu interface combined with a cell phone interface (recent dialed/received calls, etc.). So, let's agree once and for all that triple play is not about the "1 + 1 + 1" bundle on one bill. It is about a better way. A better way to receive a bundle of new services in an integrated, seamless, and care-free fashion.
